Prof. Dr. Alexander Reis attended the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium in Bludenz and studied medicine at the University of Innsbruck from 1985 to 1991. From 1995 onwards, Reis specialized at Rainer Sundmacher at the University of Düsseldorf in ophthalmic surgery and ophthalmology and became familiar with the latest techniques in corneal transplantation.
After completing specialist training in 1999, Reis received the venia legendi in 2001 and became a lecturer at the University of Düsseldorf. In the same year he settled as an ophthalmologist in the Principality of Liechtenstein and operated in the State Hospital in Liechtenstein. In 2002 he performed the first corneal transplant in Liechtenstein.
